When Stucco CEO Jake handed me the Table Sugar live tape he did while he was on tour with Kaleidoscope earlier this year, he forewarned me that the audio quality was horrible. He was not lying. I'd usually just pass the tape on to someone who would get better use of it. BUT hidden in the cacophony of tape distortion i could hear fragments of sound that intrigued me slip out. Like a Taz cartoon tornado fight where detritus would escape the vortex only to be brought back in by its terrestrial gravity. There were these unique organ bits that really caught me and kept my ears squinting like i was watching scrambled porn in middle school. Jake told me to hold out for the LP as the fidelity would match the music a bit more. This was like hearing a good rip of old Memphis rap demo's that i had previously only heard a 20th generation copy of. I keep an eye out for the LP and was excited when it finally was available. The organ is probably a thrifted casio or something even cheaper, but its perfect. Abrasive synth is not what this needs. Warm bedroom casio being played cross legged. Electric guitar and bassist not plugged in laying in bed...Drummer utilizing whatever is around....thats how i'd like to think the songs were written....accompanied by tea or lemonade and sandwiches made by mum. It's not reinventing the wheel, but at the very least its a freshly cleaned wheel...your baby sibling ay have even taken some crayons and construction paper to the wheel. Unfortunately they tacked it to the wheel so its deflating, but whatever it'll still roll down the hill. Band camp write up cites 12 Cubic Feet and Morbid Opera....I will agree with 12 Cubic Feet for sure....to those not so Messoteric (Messthetics and esoteric, look i can even invent words)...The Raincoats and their ilk of yore will steer you in the right direction. A more playful less "chase you with a pair of scissors and more chase you with a bottle of glue" version of Nots maybe? I really like this record. Playful and minimal. I appreciate bands that only need 4 or 5 tracks as its hard for me to record a song without like 20. This one will be up there at the end of the year.
