New LP from SPF....a band containing the subtle genius of Adam Keith aka Cube, as well as Will Isenogle, and Dave Easlick (who also played with Jackie-O Mother Fucker). SPF is a continuation in some ways of Keiths former ensemble Mansion, but is also a complete departure. Whereas as Mansion, while still very deconstructed, was guitar/drums based and had vocals, SPF....well they brought a guitar to the show when they played Atlanta, it was not used though hahah. Adam does "play" violin...but the primary genesis is electronic. Dave's live drumming creates a sense of power and punctuation though that can't be achieved through programming. There is something hackerish to their set up of tangled chords, united sequencers, each person controlling something that an outsider will never be able to deduce. SPF is a band about texture. While a different world, i woke and started reading a book on Tony Conrad i stole like 12 or 13 years ago but am just now getting around to reading. It can be one chord....prolonged...one rhythm.....but their are capillaries giving definition, however subtle to the music. Unfortunatley the band is scattered across 3 states now (funny to find out they are all from the south, which I've come to find out many bay area bands I've liked over the years, contain southern expats) because i feel like this is the shimmering primordial slime that could evolve into opening for Nine Inch Nails or some shit. Thats not a diss and i also could careless about NIN. Whether or not the band continues I'm glad they have blessed us with these few documents. I still have a few copies of their demo, which contains a different drummer and is slightly different but not less superb. Also for the true freaks a tour cassette that ventures into freer, noisier territories.
